Hi everyone! I just emailed a few people about what's been going on with Olivia so I thought I would share what we know...
Dr. Sood visited Olivia this morning and decided to discharge us so we're finally home! Yea!!! I was worried we'd have to stay another night because of her fever yesterday afternoon, but she said she would just switch us over to oral antibiotics and follow up with her in the office in 2 weeks. So they took out her IV (ouch) and we were out the door by 10:45!
The doctor didn't have the results of Olivia's urine culture with her so I'm supposed to call her tomorrow to see what bacteria they found growing. They called Olivia's sickness pyelonephritis - a certain type of kidney infection. Probably started as a UTI, then the bacteria traveled up her ureters and into one of her kidneys. The white cell count in her urine wasn't really that high, which is why they were originally thinking it might be an appendicitis, but thankfully it wasn't that! Surgery would have been much, much worse. So, we may have to visit a pediatric urologist to see if there's something abnormal with her anatomy which might have made her predisposed to such a problem. There's a test they can do to see if the urine is flowing in the right direction and not backing up and causing problems.
In hindsight, three and a half weeks ago when she complained of her potty hurting, that was probably the start, but at the time she never ran a fever and after a couple of days didn't complain of any discomfort.... So the signs of a UTI were mild. Still, we've been beating ourselves up for what we should have done, but that's not very productive, either.
Okay, I've rambled long enough. Delaney and Jillian were very happy to have big sister home! She's resting on the couch now and hopefully we can get her to eat something for lunch. We think she looks kinda frail.
Thanks so much for all the emails and phone calls - we have the absolute best family in the world!!!
Love you all,
Regina
